Educate Motor Vehicle Drivers on Sharing the Road with Cyclists
It's apparent that Vehicle Drivers in BC are under eduacted on safe practices to use when sharing the road with cyclists. This makes it dangerous for people who want to cycle all over the city because they feel they are increasing their risk of getting injured. BC Driver's licensing could include more requirements of knowledge regarding sharing the road. A class on bicycle safety for cyclists could also improve safety for bikers and car drivers on Vancouver streets.

Support collective housing
Support the development of collective housing- support landlords that rent to collective houses and create supports to allow collective houses to own their buildings.
Adult, children and pets living collectively pool their time and resources to implement practices that reduce their environmental footprint and support everyone's quality of life.2 votesThe City can influence land use and zoning policy, however collective housing really requires people to come together with this objective and commitment.

Urban Orchards
Create urban orchards in every neighbourhood ( cherry, apple, fig, berries, plums, apricots and peaches). Employ staff to maintain these and to teach people how to preserve and use the harvest. Graft producing branches to existing cherry, plum, apple root stock.
48 votesSmall orchards are being planted by the Park Board in golf courses and at Sunset. Plans are in the works for more community orchards. This is a strategy in the draft Greenest City Action Plan.

Increase the number of facilities available for community kitchens/ food processing
Are people still interested in joining community kitchens? These were popular a couple of years ago but excitment seems to have died off due to a lack of available facilities.
Have community kitchen with themes- such as urban singles, local food etc...
Have these spaces double as urban food processing centres- have commercial kitchens set up to allow groups to come in and process large amounts of local food at harvest time so that it will be available for later us. Host workshops on various low energy food preservation techniques, nutrition, cooking, low energy cooking etc...
Install large size community…7 votesThe City supports a number of non-profits that have community kitchens. We are looking at increasing the number of the community kitchen opportunities in the draft plan

Save dying trees, double fruit tree production with Gadgeteers' technology
Almost all dying trees can be saved -- there is no need to spend $$$$ chopping down dying trees. Also, fruit trees can double their output with the technology from Vancouver Gadgeteers.

Use and Promote recycled paper
We could require the City of Vancouver to develop a policy stating that it will only use recycled paper. Encourage the use of recycled paper throughout the city, and when that is not possible - give preference to Forest Stewardship Council certified Products. We could then require that a portion of our newsprint that is collected to be used in newsprint here in Vancouver - and require a minimum recycled content in newspapers that are distributed in Vancouver (like California!) - which will reduce our climate footprint.

Ban beach police on quad vehicles
If the City really wants to be the greenest in the world, it should not equipped its beach police with quad vehicles that pollute the air (overall when they stay iddle in the middle of the beach) and with noise. Beach police should walk or bike and let people enjoy a vehicule free area. Ironic, that we ban smoking on the beach but our own city police is emiting greenhouse gas...
11 votesVancouver Police Dept. are planning to pilot zero-emission quad (ATV) vehicles in 2011.

Mandatory 2 day "Green Building" 2 day workshop for Contractors & Sub Trades
Educate the small business tradespeople in Green Building technology and methods. Workshops would be geared to specific trades/phases in building/renovations e.g. demolition/salvage/recycling options, energy efficient design/products, sustainable and non toxic building materials and reducing what is sent to the landfill. Make it mandatory to attend every two years in order to operate in Vancouver. Offer the courses free to contractors, plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters etc. Perhaps the province could also provide a tax incentive for attendance to offset their lost revenue.
10 votesWill not be mandatory but are exploring ways to promote, support and develop training & job creation opportunities as part of the draft Greenest City Action Plan.

Get rid of refrigeration energy hogs
Refrigeration consumes ridiculous amounts of energy. More energy-efficient appliances help, but we could do a lot better than that:
No matter how energy-star compliant, fridges consume energy in proportion to how much they have to cool the air. Our houses are warm places year round. Coastal BC on average has cooler temps outside in the shade year round, including being very close to perfect fridge temps about six months of the year. Why are our fridges inside our warm houses? Build fridges into house/apartment kitchens such that most of the appliance projects outside, with just its insulated door in the…

Car Free granville island
Hardly a new Idea, this would enhance the experience of the island. It is treacherous walking around there on a weekend....that is if the cars are moving at all, as often they are just sitting in a giant line idleing.
There may need to be a nearby structure with limited parking, but increased shuttle and transit service (olympic line) would go a long way to make it feasible.
Think about all that extra real estate available without parking lots and wide roads down there! Even the Growth mongers must smile at that prospect
133 votesImplementation of the City’s streetcar plan (http://vancouver.ca/streetcar) might help to enable this, by providing dramatically improved transit service to Granville Island.

"Waste" pick up
Have Garbage and recycling trucks able to pick up bins on both sides of each ally at once. We have a truck drive down our ally 4 times each garbage day (6 with waste bins). A ridiculous waste of resources....and where are our hybrid diesel trucks, as it is the epitome of stop and go traffic

Partner w/ social development orgs to ensure a more holistic 'greening' + to build broader support
While the mandate of this project is specifically to 'green' the city, even the 'Greenest City' will be a failure if the overall welfare of its people isn't considered.
The strongest Greenest City strategy will be a holistic one, including key elements of social, community and local economic development.
Our Greenest City approach should include dedicated outreach to individuals and communities that have traditionally had low participation in Vancouver's Green movement -- to build broad support and to recognize shared goals between organizations.
8 votesThough this is called the Greenest City program, there has been a very strong social justice and economic lens to the work. There is a green economy working group and external advisory committee with membership from diverse community-based organisations and businesses. Staff the City’s Social Policy department are very active in the process.

Change the City's tendering procedure to allow for electronic notification
[Submitted by email]
We are a General Contractor that bids on City projects. The City requires that we submit our bid the day prior to opening of the bids. They also require, that if we want the information about the bid opening (bid results) to see if we are successful we must attend at the opening. This requires that we drive from Langley back and forth to deliver the bid one day, and again back and forth on the day of the opening. I thought as I drove over the old Port Mann bridge and watched them constructing a new…

Install outlets for electric vehicles in parking lots
[Submitted via email]
Consider a downtown parking lot with outlets so plugin electric hybrids can recharge. Could have some type of metre.
13 votesFollowing a 2009 Council adopted report, scaleable public charging infrastructure is being deployed to support the adoption of electric vehicles in Vancouver.

Implement Vancouver Zoom Your Roof Project
Since building heating is one of the biggest uses of natural gas in BC it should be a priority to reduce this footprint. In Belgium communities are implementing a project where residents can easily see how effective their insulation is. This lets people actually see for themselves whether investing in insulation would be worth it for them.
More info on Belgian project:

http://infosthetics.com/archives/2010/07/zoom_into_your_roof.html1 voteBuilding labeling and energy audits will help building owners and occupants understand how their buildings are performing and where they are losing heat. While we may not implement the “zoom in” program per se, these other tools included in the draft Greenest City Action Plan address same issue.

Protect wildlife habitats
An important part of living in a "Green" city goes beyond clean air, water, & waste management. It also includes protection of our local wildlife. I am always shocked each year with the number of black bears that are put down by wildlife management staff. Is this the best "management" policy of our wildlife that Vancouver can come up with? It's time for Vancouver & its surrounding communities to get to the root of the problem, which is urban development infringing on wildlife habitats and depletion of their food sources. I always say, that if you want to live in…

Georgia Street Viaduct
The vacant dirt lots under the Georgia Street Viaduct should be turned into a desirable walkable blvd lined shops and cafes that face onto expo blvd and look out onto false creek (and hopefully the expansion of the science world park). Shops and cafes and plazas are sorely missing from this part of the city and having walked many times under this viaduct during Vancouver's common rainy days it is a pleasure! The viaduct is tall and broad and shields one from the rain while still providing the sense of openness. It would be so wonderful to have an outdoor…
