All universities to use alternative energy to become self-sufficient
See the German/USA film The 4th Revolution - Energy Autonomy - it's entirely possible to use only alternatives to power our institutions and cities. The fact that it's more expensive right now is not an excuse - there's too much at stake - universities should be supported to take this step and become our 'labs' for alternative energy.

Pedestrianize Vancouver
Why not make Robson St, Granville St, Davie and Denman pedestrian only streets. The streets could also still be used by the potential streetcar and would also be open to bikes. But while were at it why not rejuvenate the downtown eastside by making it pedestrian only as well. Face it gastown just look silly with cars driving through there and china town would be revolutionized if it was only for pedestrians. These pedestrian only streets and areas would become a main corridor for commuters (pedestrians, streetcar, and bikes) this would cause higher end businesses to come to those areas…
3 votesThe draft Greenest City plan will include directions to explore pedestrian-only and pedestrian-priority streets in the downtown core. Potential locations will be identified at a later date (e.g. as part of the transportation plan update).

Trucking By Laws
Follow the lead of large American cities that limit trucking (eg 18 wheelers) within city limits to graveyard hours only, say 8pm to 6 am.
Large trucks operating during peak traffic hours only serve to slow commuters and increase exhaust emissions. The trucks themselves would also move quicker with less traffic impeding their progress, thus reducing their own toxic exhaust.

tax reduction for business commutors
Give tax reductions to businesses that reduce the commuting automobile usage of employees. This could be preferred hiring of people that live close by or subsidized bus passes. Chain-stores could swap staff between stores to get more local staff. Better carpooling organization.

Solidify Laneway Housing Through Ownership Incentives
Developing a process that will facilitate homes with lanes to be able to subdivide back to front would solidify and incentivize the production of laneway houses, effectively doubling the density in parts of the city without breaking the small scale character of neighbourhoods. The current program allows for lane way houses to be produced with an incentive from rental income, but with current development costs and real estate market the process is not readily viable at a city-wide scale and many home owners do not see enough benefit to warrant financing such a project. Eliminate minimum parking requirements
There should be no minimum parking requirements for any development in the city. Jeff Tumlin said it best "We don't have minimum housing requirements for people, so why do you have them for cars?"

Green transportation hubs throughout the
EVs are coming and we're not ready. Putting infrastructure in place with high-speed charging that also hosts bike sharing, car sharing and green commuters will have a central place to plug in and recharge.

Green City information Store
My idea is simple, set up a store close to city hall were we can go and ask questions to a real person.
Questions like,
Where can I recycle old paint cans or my old tv ?
How do I get a compost bin ?
Can I put a garden in my front yard ?Somewhere simple were we can talk face to face with someone who knows how to answer our questions about being greener.

Permit zoning for walkable, livable, amenity rich single family and human-scale neighbourhoods
Six 2000 square feet single family houses can fit on two existing 33 x 120 foot lots. The alleys are narrow streets and the streets become narrow streets to maintain green space. The density supports local amenities that you can walk or cycle to. The increased amenities provide more local jobs. It means you can get what you need locally without a car. Connect these neighbourhoods with effective public transit which is started by permitting these neighbourhoods around sky train stations and bus loops. Laneway housing is part of this solution. Transport freight using trains instead of trucks
The transport of freight using heavy duty trucks is not sustainable and causes air and noise pollution. It is far more efficient and less costly to move freight on rails rather than building new roads to accomodate increasing truck traffic.

Trucks will still have a role to play for the forseeable future. Success requires support and leadership from regional, provincial, and federal partners.

Stop tar sand exports through the port of Vancouver
Vancouver cannot pretend to be a green capital when it is actively moving to become a major oil export centre. How will the city look when a major oil spill occurs in the Burrard inlet? Worse still, do we have any contingency plans if such an event occurs? Who will pay for the cleanup?

Control, approve and publish the rate of energy consumption and carbon emission of the mechanical equipments in all of the buildings that encourage the people to utilizing the sustainable energy and environmental pollution free system and equipments.

Re-Utilizing the heat from potable water ( Dishwasher, Shower, ... )
We could use the potential heat from our shower, dishwasher and other source of hot water that we utilize everyday and utilize the energy to heat the hot water again ( Re-use it for a thermal recovery )

Threes in coffee cup
In Vancouver, a huge amount of coffee cups are use each day. If each person keep his own cups and put a seed in it with some soil or cotton, a lot of threes, plants or vegetables are going to grow in town, on balconies, in appartments. When they will become a little plant people will plant it in collective vegetable garden or just in their grass ! Everybody will have green fingers, even children who will be fascinate to look at the plants growing up each day !

Include rentable, inspected kitchens in the mandate of Parks Board's community/rec centres
Growing food is just part of the local food solution. We also need affordable, inspected kitchen spaces for canning workshops, hands-on cooking classes, community kitchens and small scale food processing.
As part of the move towards food precincts or neighbourhood food centres Vancouver needs kitchens.
The Kits and Mount Pleasant Community Centres do have kitchens, but they are not available for the public to rent. Trout Lake's new facility will have a rent-able kitchen but it is a rare case.

Green labelling for every company selling goods or services in MetroVan
Green labelling to show climate change leaders and laggards in a sector for every company selling goods or services in metro Vancouver. Allow Vancouverites to choose which company they shop at based on that firm's climate leadership!

Make waste a waste of money
Metro Vancouver is on the right track by increasing the cost of garbage disposal. Businesses listen when they are affected in areas that they understand, rising costs and decreasing profits. If recycling is cheaper than waste disposal there will be real incentive to recycle.
