Bike alternative (bridge?) to Massey Tunnel
You can't bike through Massey Tunnel. At ALL. That means you have to take a bus to the ferry, or the free shuttle service which works only in summertime and at very particular times. If you miss it, you have to wait for hours. There should be a bike bridge instead -- more flexibility for the bikers and eliminate the shuttle too.

Place More Blue Recycling Bins Around The City
Usually, people don't want to hold onto their garbage while walking, so they throw away whatever they have in their hands, even if it's meant for recycling.
I believe there should be a recycling bin right beside every garbage can, if not even more recycling bins than garbage cans.99 votes -
Reduce the use of faresaver and replace it with a resuable and reloadable card.
Instead of wasting paper on faresaver cards, why not use a plastic card that resembles like a credit card that you never have to throw out. Then you can reload it with as much money as you want on the card, either online or at a store. Also, you can put an option of reloading the card with a "virtual" bus pass, so you can get on the bus as many times as you want during that whole month that you chose to pay for.
Then on the bus, you'll just have to scan it and the machine will recognize…28 votes -
Make It Mandatory That Asphalt Roofing Shingles Be Banned from Landfills (and recycled instead)
In the Vancouver region alone approximately 80,000 tonnes of tear-off roofing shingles are disposed of in our landfills each year! 80,000 tonnes means 160,000 barrels of oil used and 4.8 million tonnes of CO2 produced! This is unnecessary waste, and there is one company making a difference in this area that grinds up the shingles to be sold as binder in asphalt paving mixes and as fuel for kilns. To keep this huge amount of waste that could be re-used out of our landfills, the city of Vancouver should partner with this company by either purchasing grinders so the landfills…

Expand current blue box recycling
Expand what can be recycled in the blue-box containers (eg: tetra-paks, plastic bags / wrappers / film, and other plastic types)
Personally, I would prefer to see a reduction in the use of plastic shopping bags. But in the mean time...it would be great to be able to recycle them effortlessly & easily.

Link all contractors and service providers to the Green City project.
To use the power of the City needs with its contractors and service providers will spread the green idea not only inside the City but all around. Request that all of them start giving information about how green are they about their services and products offered to the City and little by little ask for a minimum standard to offer any service or product.

Create cheap bike rentals (Or include the rental in the fare) around the sky train stations
Many of us are worried to take bikes to the work due to the problem of shortage of space in the buses and sky train. If we could find them at the stations and return them after work, will make it easier for everybody, and more people will be encouraged to use them.

Re-inventing the (prayer) wheel
On October 10, 2010, we will erect and turn a "prayer wheel dynamo" to symbolize the need for re-thinking our way of life, not just a technological fix. "He [or she] alone can do good who knows what things are like and what their situation is... so called 'good intentions' and so-called 'meaning well' by no means suffice." (Josef Pieper, cited by E.F. Schumacher in the epilogue to Small is Beautiful.)

Make public transportation truly PUBLIC again
Translink is a private company doing a public service. Public transportation would be better for the people, and greener for the city, if it was run by the people/city instead of by this company who has not much more than profits on the brain.

Ban all disposable bags
It won't take long for people to learn to how easy it is to bring their own bags. Somehow, I've gone two years without taking any paper or plastic bag for my groceries or purchased items.

Switch our power source from water (BC Hydro) to solar or wind
Reservoirs disrupt the natural water cycle, collecting dead biological material, resulting in massive amounts of carbon emissions, among other problems. And are NOT green. Let's switch it over to Solar or wind!

E-voting saves on paper ballots and ensures greener politicians win since they tend to be favoured by the hackers who would penetrate the online system!

Require all printers sold in the city to be uneasy to use so people are less likely to use them
If we mandated that all printers in the city must be non-user friendly, it would help prevent people from wasting paper!

Utilities prices & consumption
I know, I know. It is not new and also it can be the most impopular idea but the reality is simple. People spent because it doesn't have to pay much more. There are many histories in the world probing this theory. Create some scale having a basic levels consumption and scales and increase prices for higher volumes and for sure it will impact the "behavior" of people and all the industries.
But this idea has a special component, with the extra money received create a fund for the other green projects for the city.2 votes -
Water Reclamation and Re-use
Use a local sustainable technology such as Solar Aquatics to clean waste water for re-use within our communities. Decentralizing our waste water treatment and using fully aerated biological systems will reduce energy (pumping) costs, eliminate greenhouse gas and water pollution that come with conventional sewage treatment, reduce the amount of fresh water we need to take to take off the mountain and clean, and provide an abundance of recycled water for use in parks, gardens, green roofs, fire suppression, or a host of other needs we have.

Get rid of Vision.
Don't fall for this fluff. You want to be green, go for it. But the Vision brand of green is nothing more than another religion of half truths to make you think you are a better person than you are.

Chrismas Tree Legacy Forest/Land
Allocating plots of land such as areas of park space, city sidewalks or other areas so that people can plant potted Christmas trees after use for the holidays would provide trees for people to enjoy in their homes and, once finished for the holidays, a place for the trees to grow and be appreciated by families for years to come.
