An error occurred while saving the comment @ Jimmy, thanks for your idea. I moved it to “encourage shorter vehicle trips” as mixed use shortens the distance between amenities and facilitates walking.

Included in the Draft Greenest City Action Plan.
An error occurred while saving the comment @Janna L. Sylvest's idea that was merged into this one: "to have a credible green policy, Vancouver must include water in the planning. Sound water policy would include collection of rain water. We must strive to capture and use the abundant rain fall, leaving water from the tap for drinking. Community gardens watered from the tap instead of from rain cisterns, offer mere tokenism towards the concept of “green”. Ultimately, tokenism is seen for what it is and becomes self defeating in changing citizen behaviour. All our community gardens, schools, parks and centers should include water cisterns for collection and use in watering the gardens and grounds. City building bylaws could encourage rain water collection by permitting underground cisterns in residential and commercial construction. Rain water is a renewable, sustainable, and high quality water source that can be harvested with minimal infrastructure. This is key: while we have a significant water system in our water shed, it comes at a huge infrastructure cost which we can not claim as green."
An error occurred while saving the comment @Janna, mandating the collection of rainwater to water gardens sounds a lot like another idea already put forward. I'm going to merge the two to keep the conversation centralized. Thanks for your idea!

An error occurred while saving the comment Alexander, do you have a link about the Beijing bike repair people? Sounds like a useful service. Also, I wonder what percent mode share cycling would need to be (i.e. how many people are commuting by bike) for this to be a viable business?

Eco equity is addressed through focus on generating job creation opportunities for full spectrum of workers, from high skilled to those with barriers to employment. This is an idea that is included in the Draft Greenest City Action Plan
An error occurred while saving the comment Interesting thought Karen, who do you think would be responsible for this type of a program?

Develop a directory and/or application that helps consumers choose sustainable products and services
11 votesThere are multiple green building product and services directories that already exist in Vancouver. www.sustainablebuildingcentre.com and www.metrovancouver.com/buildsmart
An error occurred while saving the comment Christina, great idea!
This idea essentially talks about the use of social marketing to educate and engage consumers on what choices they can make – from products to services – that would be better for the planet. It sounds like a helpful tool to highlight green businesses and possibly support their development. For this reason, I moved this idea into the “Green jobs” category.
Social marketing is a really useful tool and one that we anticipate to weave throughout in order to support the strategies for the Greenest City 2020 implementation plan.

The City has supported projects that have voluntarily unbundled parking (e.g. Spectrum), and is actively working to gain authority to require unbundling in new development — this requires changes to Provincial legislation. In 2008, the City proposed the Unbundled Parking Resolution to give BC municipalities the authority to require unbundling in new development. This was passed by the Union of BC Municipalities. Provincial response to date: The Ministry of Community Development will review the proposal and refer the issue to the Development Finance Review Committee for discussion.

Several private apts and co-ops already have gardens. This is done at the discretion of the land-owner.

This is an evolutionary process. The City of Vancouver is already considered a North American leader in this regard. Current and future plans and projects (e.g. Cambie Corridor Planning Program) will continue to embrace this ideal.
