Develop a directory and/or application that helps consumers choose sustainable products and services
Imagine just selecting the 'green directory' app and being able to find sustainable businesses in the local area? Or finding a product in store and being able to look it up immediately to find out what it's sustainable qualifications are? There are a lot of people out there actively seeking out sustainable products and services, but there are a lot more who are engaged and interested - but just not sure where to start. People are creatures of habit, to motivate them to make changes you need to make it EASY for them to do so! I'm not saying it's an easy job to create a product/service directory or application - but with 'user creates' content and collaboration it may just be easier than we think.
There are multiple green building product and services directories that already exist in Vancouver. www.sustainablebuildingcentre.com and www.metrovancouver.com/buildsmart

The Vancouver Social Purchasing Directory is a partnership of local businesses, agencies and non-proft organizations with a common goal of fostering economic growth and employment in Vancouver’s historic Inner-City. It is a convenient and comprehensive list of goods and service providers who actively contribute to the social, environmental and economic welfare of the community.

There are two local green building products and services directories. One from Metro Vancouver's Build Smart program and one from Light House Sustainable Building Centre.

Christina, great idea!
This idea essentially talks about the use of social marketing to educate and engage consumers on what choices they can make – from products to services – that would be better for the planet. It sounds like a helpful tool to highlight green businesses and possibly support their development. For this reason, I moved this idea into the “Green jobs” category.
Social marketing is a really useful tool and one that we anticipate to weave throughout in order to support the strategies for the Greenest City 2020 implementation plan.
