keep transit open later - esp. on weekends
Giving people more access to late night transit - especially on the weekends 0 will increase their likelihood of using it to get to central areas as well as decrease the number of drunk drivers on the road.
A good idea that is outside municipal jurisdiction. The City will continue to work with TransLink and advocate for improved transit service, including higher frequency and longer hours.
I work in health care in the downtown area. My shifts on Sunday start at 0700h. I need to get to work - so my husband drives me there and then drives himself home (approximately 1/2 hour each way). If I could take the Skytrain, I would.
It is not always about partying when people want extended transit times. We are not all partying twenty somethings. People work in retail, hospitality and health care. Even other types of professions - such as law, office work, etc might require someone to work late into the night. People need transit to be functioning in order to attend to their jobs.
While I agree that it's convenient to bus home from a party late at night, a nearly empty bus may generate more CO2 emissions than a car. It might be more environmentally friendly to crash at a friend's house until the morning, instead.
Although this might not have such of an obvious impact in terms of 'greening', cities that have great night life attract more people to live within its limits and avoid the increasing of sprawl. Many people choose to live in denser areas because of the amenities it provides, including late-night parties, concerts, gatherings, etc. If there is no way to get back to where you live on transit, you either take a car or just don't go out.
I agree 100%. Bars close at 2 or 3am, but transit stops at 1am?? Does not make sense at all.
