Outside city boundaries and jurisdiction. Addressing major gaps in the regional cycling network could potentially be addressed through the relevant local municipalities and/or TransLink. TransLink’s draft regional cycling strategy can be found here: http://translink.ca/cycling .

This is acknowledged as a key strategy to better integrate cycling and transit. In 07/2009 the City committed some funding for secure parking facilities at Broadway-City Hall and Olympic Village Canada Line stations. The City has also conducted a feasibility study for a downtown bike centre.

An error occurred while saving the comment Maria commentedDowntown is the way people get out of Vancouver to go to the North Shore, Squamish, Whistler, etc. I don't think that inconveniencing these people is practical or green, and 30kmph is really, really slow. There should at least be a throughfare route for them. Downtown pedestrians should stop dangerously jaywalking so much, I hear it reduces their chances of being hit.

Build an underground UBC Line SkyTrain along the Broadway corridor that connects with the existing V
29 votesTransLink is currently leading a study to determine the best approach to deliver high-capacity, fast, frequent, and reliable rapid transit for the Broadway Corridor from Commercial Drive to UBC. A number of technologies and alignment options are being considered, including rail rapid transit (e.g. SkyTrain), surface light rail transit, and bus rapid transit.
The City of Vancouver is directly involved as a partner agency in the study. In April 2010, City Council endorsed ten principles to guide City input into this process (http://vancouver/ubcline/principles).

Following a 2009 Council adopted report, scaleable public charging infrastructure is being deployed to support the adoption of electric vehicles in Vancouver.

Implementation of the City’s streetcar plan (http://vancouver.ca/streetcar) might help to enable this, by providing dramatically improved transit service to Granville Island.
An error occurred while saving the comment Maria commentedIf the tram that was running from Cambie and 4th during the Olympics were to be put back into action, this would be viable. Then people could park their cars in the skytrain parking. In that case it would work very well!

Council has worked with Farmers Market Society to locate a new winter market site at Nat Bailey Stadium. Garden sites an interesting idea, but would need more study.

An error occurred while saving the comment Maria commentedI agree! People from suburbs with poor bus service will be more likely to switch to buses in the city. It often doesn't make sense to pay for parking and bus fare, you might as well drive. We need to reduce road congestion in the city centre and get as many people as possible on public transport.

The draft Greenest City Action Plan will include directions to advance parking policies that encourage a reduction in vehicle ownership and driving, support sustainable transportation choices, and increase housing affordability near transit. Better management of curbside parking will help to reduce cruising and congestion caused by drivers searching for an available space. Redesigning the residential parking permit program will address parking spillover concerns associated with off-street reductions and better reflect actual street space value.
An error occurred while saving the comment Maria commentedActually, the lack of parking for non-homeowners reduces people's ability to carpool. For example if I want to leave my car at a friend's house and take only 1 car on a hiking trip, the lack of free parking will discourage me from doing so and I will need to drive extra distance.

A good idea that is outside municipal jurisdiction. The City will continue to work with TransLink and advocate for improved transit service, including higher frequency and longer hours.
An error occurred while saving the comment Maria commentedWhile I agree that it's convenient to bus home from a party late at night, a nearly empty bus may generate more CO2 emissions than a car. It might be more environmentally friendly to crash at a friend's house until the morning, instead.

Outside City jurisdiction. It would be nice to relax these restrictions, but they do serve a purpose — relaxing them is only feasible when and where there is sufficient capacity on transit vehicles. Providing more abundant and more secure bicyle parking at transit hubs will play a bigger part in cycle-transit integration.
