Encourage urban food production
Urban vegetable gardens and container planting can go a long way towards reducing our food miles and our dependence on imports.
Successful projects in Mexico and Cuba show us that we can produce a lot of food in the city proper, so why don't we?
The draft Greenest City Action Plan will discuss this in a variety of ways.

We can grow food on roof tops, in green houses, or even in abandoned buildings throughout the city in ways that really engage residents and kids. There's a dynamic movement on vertical farming going on around the world that Vancouver could be a leader in.

So we should start balancing eco-density with food production. Way too many single houses are being demolished in the city to be replaced by high density developments with **** potential for green spaces while shading neigbours' yards. We should find a way to value and protect private gardens as a way to promote food production and sustainable living.
