Whenever we do it, people in restaurants notice and comment on it. Could we encourage restaurants to give a discount for take out when people bring their own containers?

Using public school buildings as a shared community resource after hours seems like a sensible way to get better use from existing resources. However, it should be noted that his item will require further consultation and partnership with the Vancouver School Board.

Financing tools (currently under development) may encourage building owners to improve the performance of their buildings rather than rebuild

Currently reviewing how this might work to create green jobs and advance sustainability.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedWe need a dedicated fund to support the non-profit and for-profit sectors in Vancouver to build the green economy and green Vancouver. The Toronto Atmospheric Fund is a great example of another Canadian city that has a dedicated fund to reduce the carbon footprint of the city.

A strategy in the Draft Greenest City Action Plan is to give economic development priority to green sectors, and develop a green technology centre and network, along with other specific infrastructure and demonstration projects.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedThere are already some amazing companies here doing this work! Probably one of the most dynamic clean tech clusters in North America is taking off here in Vancouver, but who knows about it? Somehow we need to find ways to get the word out about it. Perhaps we need a clean tech summit that highlights how many jobs are being created here because of this growing sector.

This idea will be included in the draft Greenest City Action Plan. A Green Enterprize Zone team is establishing an area and some initial projects including two business incubators, specific infrastructure and demonstration projects.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedThe entire city should be a green enteprise zone! BUT, we need to create tools for local companies to go green. We also need to support the companies that are already doing it- like Novex Couriers- they just bought Canada's first electric trucks for their fleet and are the first carbon neutral courier service in Canada. We need to support companies that are leading the charge!

A critical challenge for Vancouver. Laneway housing, STIR, the 20% Inclusionary Zoning Policy, and other programs and policies are intended to help increase housing affordability— see http://vancouver.ca/housing. The draft Greenest City plan recognizes the importance of affordability and will review additional strategies, e.g. unbundled parking.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedWe really need more housing that can accomodate families in the city, otherwise couples will keep moving to the burbs when they have kids. These tiny 1 bedroom units that are built everywhere don't accomodate the changing demographics of the city.

The Draft Greenest City Action Plan includes an action to develop a building deconstruction policy. The City is piloting a building deconstruction project and is exploring options for an incentive program to encourage deconstruction.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedThere are a lot of cities that are now pursuing deconstruction as a way to reduce waste going to the landfill, but this strategy could also create thousands of green jobs. Instead of 2 workers spending 2 days demolishing a house and creating 15 tons of waste, deconstruction could employ 10 people for a couple weeks while diverting 80% of the house from the landfill to a resale shop so residents can buy the material for fixing up their homes.

The draft Greenest City Action Plan will discuss this in a variety of ways.
An error occurred while saving the comment Manda commentedWe can grow food on roof tops, in green houses, or even in abandoned buildings throughout the city in ways that really engage residents and kids. There's a dynamic movement on vertical farming going on around the world that Vancouver could be a leader in.
