Solar access is always a consideration when we search for local food growing opportunities, community garden space, etc.
An error occurred while saving the comment Cabot Lyford commentedThanks to Kim for the comment. I am not suggesting we reduce our tree cover, only that we look carefully at each situation. The City plants far more trees every year than are removed and, as an arborist who takes care of them, I am in favour of it. I too would like to see many more food-producing trees as you suggested, but they need to be in places where they will be cared for and harvested properly, meaning that the human caregivers live or work close by. A big part of making urban agriculture successful is developing the people power it needs.
My point about shade is a personal one, because for years my gardeing has been constrained by competition for sunlight.

Support for this via the creation of urban farming opportunities (e.g. SOLE food). Also July 2010 Council approved expanding farmers markets.

Some elements of a local distribution network are in place with the Farmer’s Markets. The New City Market will increase the scale of this. This idea is included in the draft Greenest City Action Plan.

Who knows, maybe the corporate entities like Choices and Capers would support it, although the uneven and widely-dispursed, individualistic nature of the supply chain might not be streamlined enough for them!

Urban agriculture components are now part of the public benefit negotiations for major developments, however the use of these benefits for a neighbourhood hub like this has not yet been contemplated. Options for neighbourhood based distribution of local food are being considered in the draft Greenest City Action Plan.
