Idea shared with Parks Board
An error occurred while saving the comment Big Dave commentedThanks Christopher! Rick, I appreciate your comments about the viability of this idea in low income countries. There are many energy playgrounds at schools that have been highly successful in providing vitally needed lighting in classrooms but there have been some failures. I doubt that this will be an issue in vancouver where there are established city budgets for maintaining city playgrounds.

Very interesting idea. The planners for Hastings Park have looked at these type of amusement parks. Thanks for your interesting idea. We will share it with our project team. In our research we have run across something similar to your suggestion: check out Cyclecide http://www.cyclecide.com based out of San Francisco, operates the countries one and only pedal-powered carnival midway. An error occurred while saving the comment Big Dave commentedThanks for your comment, Hastings Park staff. I am aware of the links you provided below. I also have dozens of others as well. For example, there is a human powered roller coaster in Japan, a human powered monorail in New Zealand, a human powered ferris wheel in India, human powered bumper cars in the US, and so on. But while there are examples of individual rides in different countries, no where have they been assembled in a permanent amusement park setting. I think it would be great for Vancouver to be the first to create a truly sustainable amusement park area within PLayland. I believe that these rides could be equally as exciting to ride as regular rides but without any use of fossil fuels.

The draft Greenest City Action Plan includes an action to develop reuse centres.
An error occurred while saving the comment Big Dave commentedYes, Tax Free, your comments are correct and Habitat for Humanity also accepts donations of building materials. However, what other jurisdictions have found is that when the drop-off point is right at or beside the place were people go to dispose of their unwanted items, the recovery rate goes up very dramatically.

The City supports this idea, but implementation requires action outside municipal jurisdiction. The City will continue to advocate to the Province and ICBC for PAYD insurance.
