An ongoing process. Many of the City’s recent initiatives (e.g. downtown separated bike lane trial, additional traffic calming on existing routes) work towards this vision. The draft Greenest City action plan will support this idea, and include directions to help inform the upcoming transportation plan update and new active transportation plan.

Strongly agree with Arthur G's point about:

"better integrate cycling into public transportation systems would dramatically increase the bike's potential utility."

Can we not add more than two bike racks on the buses?

Community sharing places the importance of relationships and interdependence of resourcefulness first, rather than self worth gained through consumption of material items ie the car, large house. By encouraging pricing or charging citizens based on how close they live to where they purchase their product, supports local businesses and communities.

Good ideas! The City is currently doing a feasibility assessment of connecting a micro-turbine to the City’s water system. If the feasibility is positive, it will be considered in the City’s capital budget for implementation.

This idea is addressed in Community, Central Area, and City-Wide planning initiatives, with the understanding that fostering neighbourhood businesses requires collaboration of many different groups, public agencies, and neighbourhood residents

Zoning and other bylaws, codes, and guidelines that determine the scale and form of new development, are often re-examined through community, central area, and city-wide planning initiatives (e.g. Cambie Corridor, Neighbourhood Centres) and typically with the intent to ‘upzone’ and be more responsive to changing community needs and preferences.

The quality and attractiveness of the pedestrian experience is a primary consideration in public realm planning and design. However, there is an opportunity to be more creative in the design of specific elements, such as sidewalk materials, and incentives/requirements for pedestrian-oriented building design and facade improvements.

There is a Campus City Collaborative project in the early stages of planning, where all of the post-secondary institutions are working with the City and the VEDC to talk about movement toward the greenest city, with a focus on creation of green jobs.

    Thanks for sharing this idea!

The city’s new 10-year cycling program master plan will soon be in development, and hopefully completed within the next year.

A big part of the work ahead is to identify the complete cycling network, and the type of facility that is most appropriate and/or feasible for different routes. In some cases (e.g. busy arterial routes), separated lanes might be the best approach; in other cases (e.g. lower car volume neighbourhood streets), enhanced traffic calming and/or further reducing car access might be more appropriate. Travis cited some great examples in the Netherlands where cars are ‘guests’ that are allowed in, but do not dominate.

In all cases, the goal should be to make routes that feel safe to all potential cyclists, including beginners, children, and seniors.

Make every second street Car Free:
Get serious about the glut of cars on our streets! Street closures demonstrate how Vancouver's dense neighbourhood communities flourish when cars are removed from the environment. Even a small change in parking convenience or cost is enough to move a large population from behind the wheel to the forefront of a car-free movement.
