Great Idea. However you will need to provide large volumes of uncompacted soil to support trees that will grow large enough to create substantial canopy in the places we need it the most - sidewalks, plazas, parking lots...

The right tree in the right place still applies. Not very tree has to be a giant, especially under power lines. You can pick species that are smaller in stature but still provide value. Even smaller stature trees need adequate soil volumes to support the size and longevity of a mature(30-40 years) tree.

The followng cities already have or are in the process of passing Mandatory Soil Volume standards for their street trees: Vancouver is far behind ...

Toronto, Markham, Winnipeg, Langley, Oakville, Victoria, Kelowna

Planting trees is not enough. You need to provide adequate soil volumes to grow a tree large enough to provide shade. 30m3 of soil for a 40cm diametre tree. The city needs to set soil volume requirements as part fo the tree planting detail.
