Protect wildlife habitats
An important part of living in a "Green" city goes beyond clean air, water, & waste management. It also includes protection of our local wildlife. I am always shocked each year with the number of black bears that are put down by wildlife management staff. Is this the best "management" policy of our wildlife that Vancouver can come up with? It's time for Vancouver & its surrounding communities to get to the root of the problem, which is urban development infringing on wildlife habitats and depletion of their food sources. I always say, that if you want to live in nature, then you had better be prepared to live WITH nature. Destroying it every time it inconveniences us is not the answer.

I wish I had some votes left to support this one. We can't be green while destroying bears in our own backyard. We need penalties for people who refuse to be bear-aware. I also find it hard to believe we cannot find a place for the bears that have lost their fear of humans. A city-funded refuge maybe? That has to be preferable to shooting them.
I recently read about villagers in India who were trying to prevent human-tiger conflicts by surrendering some of their own livestock to old or hungry tigers that might otherwise become man-eaters. Regardless of whether that is actually a good idea, it's inspiring to see that people with so few resources are still willing to make sacrifices in order to preserve the neighbouring wild life.
