Promote car pooling and/or ride sharing programs
There are a number of car pooling and/or ride sharing programs in Vancouver but they are not being used by very many people. If the City of Vancouver promoted them, they could reduce a very significant number of car trips.
Some examples include: carpool.ca; ride-share.com; ride-club.ca; car-pool.ca; erideshare.com; carpoolingnetwork.com; and shareyourride.net.

NOTE: Tanya's idea "Promote more car sharing - instead of pay-as-go insurance or buying electric vehicle" has been merged with this one.
"Car sharing focuses on the #1 R - Reduce - including # of parking spots, # of vehicles manufactured, road space needed, car washing going into all drains, etc. Encouraging people to use pay-as-go insurance won't cut down car usage in same way, nor will encouraging buying electric vehicles."

I got rid of my car 3 years ago and joined the car co-op. I absolutely LOVE the car it! Have never once regretted my decision to give up my car. It has simplified my life immensely and has saved me $.

Car sharing is expensive. ZIPCAR and the Car Co-op already exist. For some it is useful for others it is not.
Most Canadians and immigrants who come to Canada come for freedom and to have a vehicle especially a CAR . A hot Car attracts the hot women. Does anyone take a hot date on the bus?

Car sharing also encourages people to create their own sustainable transportation network: sometimes walking, sometimes cycing or taking transit, and only using a vehicle for longer trips or when shlepping something.
