It saves greenhouse gases by the trucks cleaning the streets, provides compost, and gets citizens talking

natural heritage
Encourage a reverence-for-nature mindset by designating specific trees / forests / creeks / natural zones (if any remain or are restored) with heritage designation signs and legal (possibly physical) protection as is done for old houses and buildings. Restore Gassy Jack's Bigleaf maple tree. Create a signed natural heritage walk in downtown Vancouver, highlighting important natural habitats or restoration projects and new protections.

Run diesel powered public transportation/government vehicles on bio diesel.
Look to Portland for the technology.
In an age where we've recognized the degrading nature of fossil fuels, why not use a recycled, virtually emissions free source?4 votes -
give credance to developing countries
I find the name offensive. Scores of "developing" nation cities (Cuba, Laos, Bhutan, Phillipines, etc.) are and will continue to be greener than Vancouver will ever be. Lets give credence to these nations/cities and show them some respect. Rename the scheme from "Greenest City" to "Greenest Western City."

This idea is addressed in Community, Central Area, and City-Wide planning initiatives, with the understanding that fostering neighbourhood businesses requires collaboration of many different groups, public agencies, and neighbourhood residents

Travel Plan Partnerships
Develop a City – Business- not for profit – Translink partnership, to implement a comprehensive travel plan for the area. Include ideas such as small business car share / transit pass co-ops, subsidised cycle equipment & training, cycle rickshaw taxis, timetabled walking school buses etc. Only through working on a large scale with a number of interconnected projects will things be successful. You can also bring in the Health Authority to promote the health benefits of active transport.

Playing Movies Like Avatar, in Major Public Places, showing the reality & impact of big corporations
Making the largest impact in the shortest time, can make the difference. Continue funding Movies like Avatar which expose corporate America's environmental habits, and showing them on large public movie screens and starting change from the top. Companies with thousands of employees and systems, should be forced to change there habits, to reduce there carbon footprint. Public awareness may force the change that might otherwise take years.
4 votesGreat idea, and you are encouraged to suggest it to Fresh Air Cinemas and all of the community organisations that sponsor outdoor movies in the summer, including many of the Business Improvement Associations: http://www.freshaircinema.ca/; http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/cityplans/bia/index.htm

Introduce individual carbon credit/debit system
Each resident has an equal amount of carbon credits available per month. The credits are used up when buying gas, purchasing non-local products or engaging in other types of high footprint activities. Individuals who exceed their monthly limit need to purchase carbon credits from the credit/debit system, while individuals who do not use all of their credits will get reimbursed for the unused portion. Control of carbon emissions is achieved by setting the monthly limit and the cost of a unit of carbon. This system provides a financial incentive for individuals to reduce carbon emissions. Though difficult to implement in…

Green City information Store
My idea is simple, set up a store close to city hall were we can go and ask questions to a real person.
Questions like,
Where can I recycle old paint cans or my old tv ?
How do I get a compost bin ?
Can I put a garden in my front yard ?Somewhere simple were we can talk face to face with someone who knows how to answer our questions about being greener.

Composting public toilets for Wreck Beach (refer to West Coast Trail)
Wreck Beach is one of the most popular destinations in our city - it is served by FAR too few porta-potties, and they are often too few as well as rather nasty. Take the idea even bigger and make it a city wide/beach wide initiative to replace aging or non-existant toilet facilities in parks/beaches from Stanley Park to Lighthouse Park....
3 votesWreck beach is not part of the City’s jursidction but, the feasibility of composting toilets in an urban setting is being investigated.

Use safety to attract transit riders.
Focus on the safety of public transportation. If the public sees that transit is becoming safer there is more likelihood that people will use it. This can be complemented by educating the public that driving private vehicles is statistically more dangerous than taking transit.

Keep the streets clean and swept
A trash littered and gum encrusted downtown core does not enhance Vancouver’s bohemian edginess. They make the city look filthy and encourage more littering. Cleanliness is a virtue; City, please do your job and sweep / scrape the streets much more often than you do presently. Compared to other densely populated places like Chicago, Atlanta and New York, we’re filthy. It's embarrassing and pathetic.

Work with shipping & cruise line industry to reduce idling and diesel emmissions whilst in Port
Vancouver is the second busiest port in North America and sees a lot of shipping traffic. The City needs to work with the shipping & cruise industries to cut emissions whilst tankers/freightlines/cruise ships are docked in Port. Can we mandate a power hook-up to shore?
3 votesPort Metro Vancouver is under Federal jurisdiction. The City of Vancouver works with Metro Vancouver, Environment Canada, Port Metro Vancouver to advocate for shore-power. This idea is included in the Draft Action Plan.
