  1. University of Vancouver

One thing Vancouver needs is a University downtown. This would keep the student population downtown, which could create a younger and more vibrant downtown. The University should be located just south of the olympic village. Its north border being 2nd Ave, east border Main st, south border Broadway, and west border Cambie. This University would be known as the greenest university in the world. It could be completely pedestrian/bike only. With the future broadway extension in the south, Canada Line on the west, and future streetcar to the north the students would have no problem getting around. Of course there…

  2. Meltingpot

New immigrants should be encouraged to learn English. Non English signs should be removed. Everyone should feel warm and fuzzy going into any ethnic store. Bringing everyone on the the same page will promote respect, friendliness and our community will grow Green and Strong!!

  3. planting

What is with the crazy lead photo on the Talk Green to Us page?
Is that a cement mixer spewing ready to eat crops (I see tomatoes ripe) into a box over pavement while a crew...does what?

Realism about growing local food will get us there, having deep respectful collaboration with regional farmers, and a reciprocal relationship with the resources (nutrients as well as food) in the surrounding, protected, and arable lands.

  4. cut expenses, pay off debt, focus remaining resources on increased resilience

We are heading into a severe worldwide economic depression. The root cause of this depression is that we have been living beyond our means and have built up more debt than can be repaid. The coming depression will be much worse than the 1930's because the debt levels today are much higher. Furthermore, we can expect the depression to be permanent because oil production has already peaked and will begin to decline in less than 5 years. This means that no further economic growth is possible and the economy will contract for many decades.

The implications for the City of…

  5. Let's be tolerant

I think "going green" necessitates a healthy level of tolerance by everyone.

Tolerance will not pit cyclists against car drivers, but will allow each their own choice while working towards the goal that is best for everyone. Tolerance will recognize different viewpoints with an understanding that others views are as important as your own.

Intolerance alienates others and if we continue to do this, our green objectives will never be met.

    Let's work together!

  6. Carbon Tax

Impose a carbon tax on parking and building permits to fund new green infrastructure investments or pilot projects. Taxes are never popular but they are one way of curbing consumption and providing ongoing funding. Property taxes are already high and the City has very limited scope to tax consumption. Parking and building permits are one avenue they can tax.

  9. 4 Weeks Paid Holiday Leave

OK, so it's not DIRECTLY a green initiative, but more holidays makes for happy citizens that love their jobs and are proud of their city! It will provide people more time to spend with family and friends, most likely leading to beneficial economic activity for the city. Perhaps you could couple the increased holidays with a "Give a Day to Charity" campaign, where you use one of your newly acquired holidays towards volunteering in your community.

Australia, a Commonwealth country like Canada, has had four weeks of paid holiday leave for years, so there's no reason we can't make it…

  10. Re-inventing the (prayer) wheel

On October 10, 2010, we will erect and turn a "prayer wheel dynamo" to symbolize the need for re-thinking our way of life, not just a technological fix. "He [or she] alone can do good who knows what things are like and what their situation is... so called 'good intentions' and so-called 'meaning well' by no means suffice." (Josef Pieper, cited by E.F. Schumacher in the epilogue to Small is Beautiful.)

  11. Get rid of Vision.

Don't fall for this fluff. You want to be green, go for it. But the Vision brand of green is nothing more than another religion of half truths to make you think you are a better person than you are.

  12. eliminate crows

Crows are invasive species, loud, destructive, and they kill native birds. Let's reduce the amount of crows to less than 10% of the current population.

  13. Have You Considered This

That maybe the 800,000 plus Citizens of Vancouver do not want a Green City that you think of!

Did you put this to a electronic vote off the voters list?
