  2. Using GoogleMaps, connect people so they can pool their low-volume recyclables together.

Make it possible for residences or small businesses to find other people / businesses near them, so they can pool low-volume waste streams like batteries, light bulbs, wood pallets together to make it economically viable for recyclers to come and pick them up

  4. Backyard Oil Tankers

Prior to late 1950's, thousands of Vancouver homes were heated with furnace oil, which was stored underground in 300 to 1000 gallon tanks.

Tanks today are in various corroded states, and present risk of oil leaching into soil and groundwater. Expense of removal and threat of neighbourly litigation create disincentive for dealing with the problem.

A time-limited window of opportunity should be provided by city for homeownerrs to access 0-interest loans and matching funds to mitigate all kinds of nasty contamination threats.

Added bonus of creating a few 'green' jobs, and ensuring those backyard gardens won't be growing petrotatoes and…

  5. Disposable Deposit

Each and every disposable container should have a 50 cent deposit on it; a coffee cup with a lid = $1.00, a plate, fork and knife $1.50 etc.

  6. Playing Movies Like Avatar, in Major Public Places, showing the reality & impact of big corporations

Making the largest impact in the shortest time, can make the difference. Continue funding Movies like Avatar which expose corporate America's environmental habits, and showing them on large public movie screens and starting change from the top. Companies with thousands of employees and systems, should be forced to change there habits, to reduce there carbon footprint. Public awareness may force the change that might otherwise take years.

  7. All universities to use alternative energy to become self-sufficient

See the German/USA film The 4th Revolution - Energy Autonomy - it's entirely possible to use only alternatives to power our institutions and cities. The fact that it's more expensive right now is not an excuse - there's too much at stake - universities should be supported to take this step and become our 'labs' for alternative energy.

  9. Trucking By Laws

Follow the lead of large American cities that limit trucking (eg 18 wheelers) within city limits to graveyard hours only, say 8pm to 6 am.

Large trucks operating during peak traffic hours only serve to slow commuters and increase exhaust emissions. The trucks themselves would also move quicker with less traffic impeding their progress, thus reducing their own toxic exhaust.

  10. Eliminate minimum parking requirements

There should be no minimum parking requirements for any development in the city. Jeff Tumlin said it best "We don't have minimum housing requirements for people, so why do you have them for cars?"

  12. Make ride-sharing fast, easy and cheap

Let's push the taxi companies to follow closely and pair up with local entrepreneurs to learn about "social transit" as being piloted in New York City right now by the company Weeels (http://www.weeels.org/) for easier and simpler taxi sharing. The Vancouver fleet is already on hybrids, and this will further help taxis be more efficient in their use of roadspace as well!

  13. relax bike restrictions on skytrain

Allowing bikes on the skytrain during rush hours will encourage people to use transit & their bikes as a viable means of transport. The trains are crowded but a possible solution would be to make the last car of each train seatless making way more room for bicycles and passengers at the same time.

Outside City jurisdiction. It would be nice to relax these restrictions, but they do serve a purpose — relaxing them is only feasible when and where there is sufficient capacity on transit vehicles. Providing more abundant and more secure bicyle parking at transit hubs will play a bigger part in cycle-transit integration.

  15. Encourage public-led programs in parks and plazas

Older cities around the globe are models for how to create dense, livable neighbourhoods. Creating smaller housing units in denser neighbourhoods is a great way to get people to live closer to the urban centre and preserve natural and agricultural areas in metropolitan area. Density alone will not create livable, dense cities. Parks and plazas become critical as they the space that was lost as the housing units and lot sizes get smaller. Many of the programs in public parks provide recreation opportunities, but there is also value in programs and events that enhance community. Some of these programs can…

  16. Threes in coffee cup

In Vancouver, a huge amount of coffee cups are use each day. If each person keep his own cups and put a seed in it with some soil or cotton, a lot of threes, plants or vegetables are going to grow in town, on balconies, in appartments. When they will become a little plant people will plant it in collective vegetable garden or just in their grass ! Everybody will have green fingers, even children who will be fascinate to look at the plants growing up each day !

  17. Provide more effective security on transit

Public transit is a very safe mode of transportation, but there is a stigma amongst non-users that you will be more comfortable in your vehicle than on a bus or skytrain. Many regular, paying transit users are also upset that some users are riding for free because the drivers cannot properly deal with riders that refuse to pay. Providing a quick, effective and courteous response to security incidents on public transit vehicles will increase the general confidence in the system. Translink must be able to track where and when the majority of incidents happen, so that security can be more…

  18. Campbell and Union St. ~ traffic lights for bicycles and cars.

The intersection at Campbell and Union Streets is dangerous, for cars and bicycles. A traffic light for bikes on Union Street, and cars, would make both drivers and cyclists feel safer. If traffic lights are too expensive, what about a four way stop with bicycle pictures on the signs?

  20. Redesigning crosswalks to have a U-shaped design

The City could redesign crosswalks at busy intersections where there is a high amount of J-walking. By redesigning crosswalks to have more of a U-shape, crosswalks could better for the way pedestrians interact with the street, making walking safer, and promoting walking further. There would be limited impacts to traffic congestions while promoting safer streets for pedestrians. Davie and Thurlow would be a perfect place to start!
